Few lines by me....

....To be or not to be....

In a span of 7+ years of professionalism, I have had rendezvous with professionals from various ethnicity, different perception and multiple hierarchy. Based on what I observed and what I saw people talk about and what people like or dislike and what I like or dislike, here I want to draw few interesting points and leave an open ended thread for all my friends to put together some rules or sketch some path and give an Idea, a message  "To be or not to be".

Time Keeper : Often I see people in the industry behaving like a time keeper and judging folks by the time they put on, rather than the efficiency and work they do. I understand the commitment (as part of contract) been given to customer for x hrs, but sometimes the ones who sit x+ hrs are considered hard working and better.
Think this way, there are possibilities that the person leaving after x hrs is more efficient or he or she can manage their work with better efficiency.

Also, in case of  "time and Material" mode projects by putting extra effort we are definitely setting a wrong expectation as many a time billing is not exactly based on time spent and that might result in resource reduction which in turn impact revenue of project and result in loss to the company.

I say "Yes" to everything : I say "Yes" to everything, that means I am hardworking, intelligent and dedicated employee. WRONG! Saying "Yes" to everything might work for you and your project for short duration but on long term it might impact you and the project sometimes so bad that there is no way return and you find you or your project somewhere else than you expected/wanted.

Put on some extra effort: Another tendency which I am seeing going viral these days is to motivate employees to "PUT" extra effort which is nothing but a synonym to slog for multiple hours and weekends and sometimes even on planned/unplanned/declared holidays. If it is for few days and for genuine reasons it does makes sense, but sometimes people just enjoy their authority and like to just show that they are so responsible and worrisome. This does nothing but demotivates team and people involved and also few people develop rebellious attitude due to this.

I will have a say on everything you do or will do : In-short "Micromanagement" . This is the most important ingredient and last nail in the coffin to demotivate or destroy employee. What you did, What you would be doing, when you come, when you go, lets have meeting 5 times a day to know your status, lets have productivity evaluation tools on your m/c and so on. This is one thing which people always complain about and most of the time is so frustrating that people start looking for options outside and sometimes just develop "I will see what you can do" attitude.

Not a "Loyalist" may be "Incompetent" : This is very interesting fact I have observed for last few years.  If a person spent a fair amount of years in a company, then sometimes few people (Read senior managers, Managers and HR) see them as "Incompetent" to get job elsewhere rather than seeing the loyalty behind it. They think that its impossible for the person to break the comfort level and that person will stay even if we treat him/her as "Good For Nothing". I have seen most amount of attrition due to this same attitude, of loyalists and very good, well skilled and important resources. And this may not be realized as a loss to project, unit/department but is definitely a major set back for company which they realize when its very late.

Its your "Aspiration" not my problem : This is another blunder, I have seen in abundance. Manager(s)/HR(s) have "I give a damn" attitude towards people's aspiration and they are so blunt that it sometimes hurt that person's self respect/Ego. Rather then empathizing with people, the attitude of we cannot do anything you look for yourself sort of behavior worsens everything.

These are few of my observations, perceptions and even challenges which I faced. Also, I noticed its not the company that people leave, its the Managers, senior managers, project or above situations which pushes them to leave their job. Few may say that its all about money and people switch for "Hikes". "Yes" true to some extent but believe me that's not the only reason.

I chose "Not-to-be" of any of above whenever I become a Manager or get authority. What about YOU?

Feel free to add/comment/correct/criticize/appreciate.

QUEST for Success

Success!!
One thing every one quest for, aim for and die for.

What it takes to be on never ending quest to be successful and then surpass the previous success and so on...?

Don't look for the answer just follow the QUEST!!

Here is my attempt( may be a silly one ) to use my experiences, known results and skills, to look and share what I believe is the answer or may be a direction towards the answer to my above question.

Quality: A few years back somebody asked me "What will you choose Quality or Quantity?" and I replied immediately and very positively with "Quality" and then the gentleman asked WHY?

Now this WHY? is always been a tricky part for all of us, and it gave hard time to me too. Nonetheless, After thinking for a minute or so, I said let me explain this way sir.

I will give you 1 lock and 100 keys, but only 1 key has the quality to open that lock for you but you do have 100 keys. So even though you have quantity still you will look for Quality eventually to open a lock.So why not before?

I remember he told me son you have a good future and I was very happy. So in my opinion our efforts should Qualitative. Once you have quality you not only gain confidence & excellence but it also gives you an upper hand before your peers.

Understanding: Whenever I see word understanding I immediately remember a quote by Sir Albert Einstein which goes as below

“Any fool can know. The point is to understand.”

You can be clear on your goals, tasks, work etc. but its very important to understand other factors like people involved, required skill, external factor which can have an impact on what you are doing and so on.

So, we not only have to know our problem but have to understand everything around it.

Experience:  If you fail 100 times don't look at it as your failure, you actually discovered 100 ways which doesn't work. You not only gain experience from best of your works but you also gain it from your stupidities. Its not that only you have to work to gain experience, life is too short to experience everything on your own, use experiences of others, be attentive to what senior people say (even if it is crap) but you never know what out of that will help you and when.

Suggestions:  Its human tendency that we treat suggestions as criticism or suggestions oftenly look like intrusion. But be open to suggestions, if it will not help you atleast you will be at peace that even after not taking those suggestions you still did pretty well. But never just brush off suggestions being extended from seniors, elderly beings and even from children's or people below your level.

And to be honest, some suggestions which I found not very cool or retaliated have helped in my favor and I do regret not accepting those suggestions at first place.

Talent: Last but not least, Talent. Lets accept this fact that few people are born talented and there can't be any denial to that. But few talents can be developed, Like talent of speaking, writing, socializing and even working efficiently(this might not be a talent in traditional sense but for our quest they are). And to support my point further here is another quote from Sir John F. Kennedy

"All of us do not have equal talent, but all of us should have equal opportunity to develop our talents".

And finally, I open this forum which will help me, my friends, my siblings and also may be to few acquaintances to move ahead and follow their own QUEST to success.

Hoping your sincere suggestions and inputs.

COMMUNAL VS SECULAR....MODI VS ALL....

What I hate the most are "DOUBLE STANDARDS".

AAP, CONG, SP, BSP and all other political parties and their supporters proudly say that they have been given Clean chit or being found "No Guilty" for so and so case by High Court(HC) or Supreme Court(SC)...But then when it comes to Modi..Even though when SC has given him clean chit they are not ready to accept it. They still want him to apologize..They still tell that he is communal (Maybe my friends u r right). But my friends have u heard about below quote

(Forget about past, think about future)

  1. Does being SECULAR in India has become a synonym to being a hater of MODI?
  2. Why all debates end with MODI? Why LS Elections 2014 has became all parties and their supporters against MODI?
  3. Does anyone who tells that his "Gujrat Model" is all fake and he has just made it up all ever visited "Gujrat" or met any resident of Gujrat?
Now here are answers
Ans 1: Just listen to his views in the attached Video and try to understand. He is so blunt and so true about his views and I respect it. So understand true meaning of "Secular".

Video:  MODI VS DIGGI RAJA

I will come back to Ques.2 after answering question 3.

Ans 3:I have met many people who are from Gujrat and are now settled in foreign countries. They very happily told me that they have never thought that any city in India will ever be like what many of the cities in Gujrat are. I can sense a proudness in them being a Gujrati even though they are Canadian resident or may be Canadian citizen.

Now I come back to my question ""Why LS Elections 2014 has become all parties and their supporters against MODI? "

Ans 2: A hopeful and optimistic person inside me thinks( and that's entirely my opinion), that if he becomes PM he will do so good that like Gujrat atleast for other 15-20 years no other party will have a chance to come to power and this is why all are after him.

He is a very senior leader and an experienced one..Look at his views. I agree he or his party members are not the most innocent and most of them are notorious. But right now the best bet for India is "Modi". Atleast he has a vision for India. He talks about issues which are real, which actually needs attention. He doesn't say he will do a dharna to correct so and so issue. He never chicken out of situations and most of all he is blatant and courageous enough not to change his views for anybody.

Yes, political parties in India are corrupt. Not even a single party and that means "NOT EVEN A SINGLE". That is sad but true.

I never wanted to come political on social site but few of my friends with very strong "SECULAR" views forced me to write my views. More then the campaigning for their party, people are trying to enforce their views on others.

I request please keep following your party but don't tell me who is what and how. I am an individual with my set of opinions, standards and way of thinking. Supporting anyone doesn't make me "Communal" or doesn't make me a fool and so is true for you if you are following any party.

So be a little considerate when you comment on something and feel free to say that only "MORONS, IDIOTS, EDUCATED IDIOTS" support MODI or some other party. At the end you or I can't gurantee if so and so person will do good or not. Only time will tell but don't make such comments which will ensure that we no longer stay even cordial. I don't support him(MODI) or his party (BJP). I support his vision and I support my optimism for a better India which I find he can help us with. I might be wrong but that's entirely my opinion. Follow it or delete it..UP TO YOU...

Top 5 mistakes by professionals and professional industries...

After ~7 years of experience and my close rendezvous with various professionals from multiple industries, I have learned a lot of things about professional industry and it's DO's and Don't, Positives and negatives and common trend which took a toll not only on industry but on professionals too. Here, I want to highlight few points which in my opinion I think is impacting/ impacted industry the most...

1. Over-commitment : This is one thing which I have always seen as the biggest problem in most of the professional companies and individuals. They commit to complete 10 modules/things in the time frame in which every one knows only 3 modules/things could be done properly and then they push the team's involved to work like pigs increasing their frustrations and affecting their abilities and for what?

For 10 broken pieces along with broken client trust and employee's harmony & satisfaction. Instead, positively client would have preferred 3 fully functional and good quality modules/things.

2. Over-Analyzing : Analyzing an issue or problem is an art too. But over analysis might lead everybody involved to an an endless road (Read multiple meetings, blame-game, office politics and ultimately to a deadlock). Sometimes, I see professionals over analyzing a situation and taking steps needlessly which not only create a havoc but also confuses involved individuals and client.

3. Loose Estimates : Estimates are one of the most integral and most screwed up part for almost all the industries. There are many ways to estimate but people/professionals put on estimates based on their experiences without taking into account factors such as competency, skill sets, avg. experience and domain/ business knowledge.

In-fact I have seen estimates which in a way is an effort to make 9 women deliver a baby in 1 month which as far as I know is Impossible.

4. Insensitivity towards Employees : Most professional companies especially Indian professional industry is highly insensitive towards their employees and their needs. They do claim to be very sensitive and highly appreciative to their employees but many a times you will notice quite opposite to it.  Employees are the core strength of the companies and less motivated, unhappy employees are the first sign of downfall of any company. This should be one major concern a company should have but generally employee satisfaction is either not in the agenda for most of the companies or more commonly on least priority.

5. Self created Deadlocks : Slowing down promotions, stopping Visa applications, hikes or creating tons of policy for cost reduction may help a company on a short run but it does have a negative impact in future. In a way company itself creates a deadlock for them and things become out of control as there is a pile up of aspirations and tougher time for middle and senior management to handle aspiration, anger and demotivated employees. Instead in my opinion promotions, hikes, visa application must be a continuous phenomenon, company is free to take liberty and reduce numbers or slots but should never break the chain.

These are just few points which I have noticed being part of professional industry, I may be wrong at few things and I request you to feel free and add/correct wherever you feel like...

Aksarr....
